đź“Ł How To Start Recording Promo Videos Starring You
Many people have a fear of being on video, being on camera. In fact, being live to camera brings up the same fear as public speaking, which is known as one of the top three fears. However, it's also been shown that by 2022, 82% of the content consumed online will be video.
So how can we get over the fear, have a slice of that pie and start creating or recording promo videos that are starring you?
Here are 7 tips to get you started:
🎬 Find a great spot to record
Whether that is in your office, home office, studio, outdoors, while you're walking through the park, whatever that is, find a spot that's going to be in alignment with your brand and your business and really be able to showcase yourself, your personality, and what it is that you are recording new videos about. Some great videos are being recorded in co-working spaces filmed as the speaker walk with the camera in front of them. Wherever you choose to do it, pick a spot and continue to use that spot for your ongoing video recording.
🎬 Set a regular day/date to do your recording
Pick a time that is going to work for you, whether that is daily, monthly, or whether you record your videos in bulk. Work out what works for you and then pick a time, make it regular, and then stick to it. We very much are creatures of habit. So being able to create a habit around recording videos is really going to create value for you and empower you to continue to record these videos.
🎬 Follow a structure
Pick a presentation structure that works for you. Whether that is a regular structure like talking about a problem, a solution, an outcome, and then a call to action. It’s usually around having an introduction or having a title and introduction, a few dot points perhaps, and then completing the structure with a call to action at the end. Or choose a different structure that's going to work for you and then continue to implement. Consistently following your structure and scripting and recording will help you learn how to do it and then get better and better and better.
🎬 Keep an ear/eye out for topic ideas
Topics can be very difficult, especially when you’re doing your videos regularly. A really good way to find topics is to keep your ear to the ground on what's happening around you. Listen to your customers and listen to your teams and your colleagues. For example, the video that I did last week - How To Support Ongoing Learning Post-webinar, came from listening in on a colleague's briefing call with their customer. Setting yourself a dedicated space where you can write your topics down, is essential too. This can be as simple as using Notes on your phone or keeping them in a spreadsheet and you ticking them off. The process doesn’t matter, as long as you have one.
🎬 Get physically and mentally prepared
When you’ve decided which day and time you will record your videos, make sure to get physically prepared. Check if your hair is looking nice, maybe put some makeup on and make sure it’s in alignment with your brand. Wear appropriate attire for the types of videos that you'd like to showcase and how you’d like to promote and present yourself. Make sure you’ve had enough sleep and get mentally prepared. Some breathing exercises before starting or meditation can help.
🎬 Work out how to script that works for you
Some people love to write every single word for their presentation. Another option can also be using a teleprompter or a screen that sits behind your camera. Some people are great at presenting word for word, from writing the script, remembering the script, and delivering the script. For some people, that might not work. Some like to use dot points and then ad-lib the content based on what's happening in their minds relating to the topic on that dot point (this is my preferred way). Some people are great at just jumping up and being able to deliver.
No matter what works for you, choose a way of scripting, implement it into your process and make it consistent.
🎬 Practice!!!
Anyone who has been filming videos for a few years and sees their Facebook feed showcase it as a Facebook Memory will re-watch those videos, and they make you cringe a little bit. You may think “that could’ve been explained better”, or “you shouldn’t have used that gesture”. If you feel that way, it kind of shows you where you may need to improve.
A recommendation for you is to just get up there and practice. Practice doing the videos and start to grow, as a presenter, as a speaker, as a video personality so that you can have that piece of the video pie in this new normal.
Conclusion
So there you have it. How you can start recording promo videos that will be starring you. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll get better and start to have a piece of the 82% video pie to help you promote yourself, your business, your webinars!
