Are you boring your webinar audience?
Do you know that right now, when we're running online events, such as webinars, our audience has so many distractions, so many things that can take them away from focusing on you? So today, I'm going to talk about how to engage and be engaging on your webinars.
9 ways to engage your audience on your webinar
đź’ˇOpening Slide
When letting your audience into the digital room, share your screen with an opening slide. Make this slide the same as the graphics you used to promote the webinar. this way, everyone knows they are in the right place
đź’ˇMusic
Have music playing as you let your audience in, this keeps the mood upbeat while you’re waiting for everyone to show up
đź’ˇChat
Chat with your audience when they are in the waiting room and as they enter the room. Welcome them! You can even start with an ice-breaker in the chat. Also, use your chat regularly to check-in with our audience and for Q&A
đź’ˇStop Screen Share
When you’re using presentation slides, stop screen share when you have important points to make. This will connect your audience with you and help to change the dynamics so your audience doesn’t get bored
đź’ˇLook At Your Audience
It’s tempting to look at your screen however, to look your audience in the eye, you must look at he camera
đź’ˇBody Language
Only 7% of what we communicate are the words we use, the rest comes from body language and tonality. Use these to communicate more effectively. Use tonality, facial expressions and hand gestures to support your presentation
đź’ˇChange It Up
People get bored easily, so change it up, use your background image, the chat function, polls, Q&A, a workbook and breakout rooms to keep your webinar dynamic
đź’ˇInstructions
Provide VERY clear instructions. You are not in the room with them and people don’t like to interrupt to ask questions. If you are not very clear on what they need to do, they will disengage
đź’ˇIce Breakers
Ice Breakers are great for live in-person event and they are even MORE important in a webinar. Ice Breakers can be as simple as “pop in the chat where you’re joining us from?”, “pop in the chat your favourite emojis” or “pop in the chat, what is your favourite dessert?” These help your audience get used to using the tech and help them connect with you and each other
Online engagement is imperative for webinar success. Think about how often you have been distracted while on a webinar. Don’t be boring! Make sure you utilise as many options as are available to you to keep your audience engaged.
