📣 How To Get Mentally And Physically Ready To Deliver A LIVE Online Event!

Let’s face it, the world has changed. The world of events has been hit HARD but not all is lost.

It’s possible to take your in-person LIVE event to an online LIVE event.

As I sit here, getting ready to co-deliver what would be my 20th event of this lockdown, I decided to reflect on the learning’s that I've taken from the last 20 events plus countless events that I've attended. And also hundreds of classes that I have taught online.

The world of events has changed dramatically. Gone are the days where we're in person in a conference centre, in a workshop room, in a class we are now relegated to the online world. And whilst the live, in person events have changed. So have the live online events, and this brings us tremendous opportunities, opportunities for a business owner, for a speaker, an author, a consultant opportunities to get right in front of our ideal audience in the comfort of their own home. And so as I stand here all dressed up and not really anywhere to go, except to be here with you guys.

I wanted to share some of the things, tips and tricks that I've learned over the last six months on how to prepare both mentally and physically to deliver the best online event possible. So let's start with our mental state.

Here are 7 tips on how you too can get mentally and physically ready to deliver a LIVE online event:

1. Trust that you know your content and let go of any uncertainty.

You are the BEST person to facilitate/deliver the upcoming event.

We must trust that we know our content. You are the best person to deliver what you know, nobody else in the world has had your experiences. So trust that you know your content and that will help us let go of the imposter syndrome. I remember I was delivering a presentation for the learning and teaching conference at our MIT, a conference full of teachers. And my presentation was how to be as engaging in the digital room as you are in your classroom. And as the counter started to take over, plus 100 participants, I thought started niggling at me, who am I to be teaching these people how to present, how to deliver their content.

But then I had to put that aside and really bring the best me forward because I trusted that I knew my content, but I also prepared.

2. Let go of the imposter syndrome.

Use whatever techniques work for you to flip your insecurities. Meditation, exercise, visualisation, positive self-talk... choose your medicine. Prepare psychologically; meditate, exercise, visualize, engage in positive self-talk. Use whatever techniques work for you. Take that on, get ready and let go of that imposter syndrome

3. Create the best version of you.

Create the best possible version of you; have a shower, do your hair, put on makeup (or shave), get dressed for success (however that looks for you, make sure it reflects your brand). You will feel great if you look great and when you feel good it will totally come across to your audience.

4. Set up your equipment.

Set up our equipment; make sure that your camera is at face height, your light is facing you so that you are not in the dark, your screens are set up, your mic is on and charged. Make sure you understand how your tech and your equipment works.

It doesn't have to be difficult if you could only see my setup, I have an ironing board with a wine box and my computer on top of it with a light that's hanging off a whiteboard, but that's working for me right now. For some of you might have your video station set up with high-end tech and equipment already.

Either way, make sure that it's all set up and ready for you to deliver your best possible event.

5. Know how to use the tech.

Know how to use our technology, learn how to use the online platform you'll be using to deliver the event, whether that is through WebEx, whether that's through a university portal.

However that looks for you, learn how to use it, how to use the chat, how to share your screen, how to use multiple screens, how to enable others, to share their screen, how to get the music going for your audience. Understanding your tech is so important because there's nothing worse than seeing the person who is meant to be the expert. Struggle with their technology automatically diminishes the way that your audience thinks of you and really takes away from your message.

6. Set up your background.

Whether you’re using a virtual background or a physical background make sure it’s curated to support your delivery.

When setting up your background, make sure that what's behind you looks good. It's reflective of your brand, whether that is a virtual background, or whether that is a physical location, make sure it is reflective of your brand. And it looks good. We've all seen horror stories where people have their washing hanging out or some people even take their devices to the bathroom. Don't be part of that group. Make sure that the background really suits what it is that you're delivering

7. Stand up to deliver.

Standing up when you’re delivering your content makes you look good, gives you more freedom to express yourself through body language. Standing up also helps you to breathe better. It helps you to project your voice better. It enables you to use body language more effectively. You've got greater use of your hands. You've got more ability to turn around. You can paint a better picture when you're standing.

BONUS: Get excited! You have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Don’t take that lightly, be grateful, be energised, be your best you.

Then one final extra tip get excited. You have a unique opportunity to make a difference. The people who have chosen to come to your event are there to listen to you are there to take on the knowledge that you have to share with them. And that is a blessing. And so get excited, get ready, and then deliver the best online live event that you can because you're ready both mentally and physically to do so.

Now I've got to get prepared for the next live event that I'm co-delivering this evening.
