HOW TO CONNECT TO CONVERT
Do you feel frustrated, knowing that you have value to share but people just are not listening?
See in Australia, what we've been taught is, if we just keep our head down and work really hard, eventually people will pay attention. What I found is if we really want to make a difference, if we want to influence our industry, what we need to do is we need to get into the arena, stand up in front of our own crowd and connect to convert.
In today's digital world where I'm more connected by our devices than ever before, but you know what? The human connection is missing.
I have been working with visionary leaders to take them from unknown to industry influences through the power of connection at live events. And in this article, I’m shining the light on how you too can do that.
See, standing up in front of an audience gives you instant credibility, but once we're there, we need to build trust by connecting and convert by delivering value.
So how do we connect and convert?
Build A Powerful Personal Brand
Our very first element is building a really powerful personal brand. We have powerful devices in our pockets and we need to use our devices in order to do that.
Did you know that the top 1000 things followed online, are people, not brands, they're not companies but people. And so we need to use our devices to build that personal, powerful brand.
Position yourself as an influencer, use social media, and take photos and videos. Have a point of view and share your positioning with the world by creating and sharing interesting content. You can do this from anywhere, tell stories, be interesting.
What is your personal brand saying about you? What happens when people Google you?
Understand Your Audience
Once you have built your solid personal brand, the next thing you need to understand is your audience. Who your audience is, where they hang out, what you do for them, what their problems are, and how you can solve them.
The best way to do that is to listen to your audience. Really listen, we have two ears and one mouth and we need to use them accordingly. We need to listen more than we talk.
In listening, we gain an understanding and can provide the right solution for the right person at the right time.
Clearly Communicate
Now that you have listened and understood your audience, you need to clearly communicate.
Communication is 7% of the words we use and 93% nonverbal.
Do you like to people watch? Think about it. You can look across the road and know if people are arguing or better still, you know if someone's on a first date! You don't need to hear what they're saying.
What that means is in our written communication, we need to distil the top 7% and communicate it effectively. And when we're on stage we need to connect by using the other non-verbals, our body language, our tonality, our tone of voice, our facial expressions, our energy all help to curate the experiences.
Curate The Experience
As human beings, we are hardwired to remember our experiences.
Therefore, it is your duty when you've got people in the room to really think about all 5 senses. Think about what your audience will smell, touch, hear, feel, taste. Let’s use the cinema as an example: the whole experience is curated for you to watch the movie. Imagine if there were lights on and people were talking, it would ruin it.
This level of details is critical in building connection.
Deliver Value
And finally, we must deliver the best possible value.
Did you know that people go to events in order to network, to meet like-minded people and to learn? And it's in that order. So give people what they want. Your network is your net worth. Bring your network together. Then facilitate communication between your attendees or your audience, and finally share your value. Teach them your worth and position yourself as that influencer. And if you do that, you will build trust and you will connect and you will convert.
